As we enter 2022, your mind might be on the next steps you can take for your business. While this is a great move, creating impossibly lofty goals might not be in your best interest.

The best kinds of goals for your business are ones that motivate you to not only grow, but to be able to sustain that growth. That’s why some business goals can end up doing more harm than good – nothing kills motivation like trying to reach a constantly moving target!

We have put together some advice on goals that you can take with you into the new year, so that you can continue to grow your business.

The problem with goals -

Goals like ‘I want to be a millionaire this time next year’ are great, but they only show one specific part of a bigger picture. You could become a millionaire, but perhaps by sacrificing the integrity of your business. Likewise, you could become a millionaire, but by sacrificing your personal relationships and overall happiness.

Another reason that these types of goals can be harmful is that there are always going to be factors that are outside of our control. External events can affect the outcome of your attempts, no matter how determined you may be. Instead, try focusing on things that are within your control, such as your ability to problem-solve or your personal development!

This isn’t to say that you should never create goals for your business – if your focus is slightly scattered and you like to have a solid plan, set a goal to give you something to aim towards. Be aware, however, that things may crop up that can delay your progress.

Better business goals -

Aim for goals that reflect the parts of your business or mindset that you can control, for example:

• I aim to have a great relationship with my existing clients
• I aim to take on tasks outside of my comfort zone to help my personal development
• I aim to learn a new skill to expand the horizons of my business
• I aim to meet any challenges with a pragmatic attitude
• I aim to have a better balance between work and my personal life
• I aim to be more organised and efficient by making weekly to-do lists
