When you are first starting your career as a virtual assistant, it’s worth spending some time thinking carefully about what services you are going to offer.

For some, choosing services comes naturally as you may have a particular specialism that you wish to focus on. For others, however, this decision can feel daunting!
Things to consider:

What skills do you have? Do you have qualifications or any experience that you could draw upon? What are your strengths

Here are just a few of the skills you could use in your career as a VA:

• Event organization
• Transcription
• Website design
• Social media strategy
• Video editing
• Administration

What do you enjoy doing? There’s little point in agreeing to offer a service that you dread doing!

Would you be willing to go to a client’s office from time to time? Or would you prefer to work entirely remotely? This could make a difference in terms of what services you should offer.

Do you prefer to work with organized, methodical types or creative types? If your preference is for the former, you might prefer tasks such as diary management, admin, or accountancy. If you prefer creative VA work, you might want to offer services such as social media design or copywriting.

Do you want tasks that are ongoing and recurring? Or tasks that are focused on one specific project?

What tasks are in demand right now? You don’t have base your entire decision on this, but it makes sense to choose tasks that are in-demand amongst clients. If you happen to have skills that relate to a particularly in-demand task (for example, social media management), then it makes sense to offer this service. Take a look at job boards and freelance sites to find out which services people are looking for.
As a virtual assistant there are numerous skills you could focus on – the tricky part is deciding! You could offer a variety of services if you have a number of strings to your bow, or you could specialize and only offer one or two services. The most important thing to consider when choosing your services is to make sure that you will be able to offer the very best service to your clients. Whatever you choose, make sure that you have the skills needed to meet your clients’ expectations – that way, they will be completely satisfied and might work with you again.

Be careful not to offer too many services – you can’t be all things to all people. Just focus on what you are good at!

Above all, take time and do your research when it comes to choosing your services. It’s not a decision to be taken lightly!
